The Wolf and the Shepherd
Long ago a young shepherd lived beside an old, cool forest. Every morning he took his white sheep to the fresh grass. The birds sang happily and the sheep grazed calmly.
One day a big grey wolf appeared among the trees. At first the shepherd was afraid and held his stick tightly. But the wolf hurt nobody and watched the flock from far away.
Day after day the wolf came closer to the shepherd. When a naughty sheep ran away, the wolf brought it back. The shepherd was very surprised and began to trust the wolf. "This wolf is a good friend and a guard now," he said.
One sunny afternoon the shepherd wanted to visit the nearby town. He left his sheep with the sleeping wolf and walked away.
After the shepherd left, the wild wolf showed its true face. The hungry wolf attacked the flock and ate every sheep.
In the evening he found only white wool in the meadow. He sat down sadly and understood his terrible mistake.
Too late he learned this: never trust a dangerous animal. Bad hearts never change, however friendly they look. The wolf changes his coat, but not his nature.
