The Wolf and the Heron
One day a hungry wolf walked through a big dark forest. The wolf was lucky, because he found fresh meat and began to eat. But he ate too fast, and a huge bone stuck in his throat. The wolf could not breathe, and he ran through the forest in pain. He asked everyone for help, but the animals were afraid of him. Just then a heron with long legs stood by the stream.
The wolf came to the heron in pain and began to beg. "Take this bone from my throat, and I will reward you well," he said. The heron was afraid at first, but the reward changed her mind. She carefully put her long beak into the wolf's huge mouth. She caught the sharp bone deep inside and pulled it out at once. The wolf breathed deeply, and the pain went away immediately.
The happy heron stood in front of the wolf and asked for her reward. The wolf laughed in an ugly way and looked at her with angry eyes. "You put your head in a wolf's mouth and you still live," he said. "Your greatest reward is your life, so ask me for nothing more!" The poor heron felt ashamed of her good deed and walked away. Waiting for thanks from bad people is a big mistake. Serve the wicked, and evil will be your only pay.
