The Wise Swallow
In spring a wise swallow stood in the village field. It saw a farmer sow flax seeds in the soil. The swallow called the other small birds at once. "We must pick up these seeds quickly," it said. "When the flax grows, people make bird nets," it warned. The other birds did not listen to the wise swallow. They laughed and went on looking for food.
In time the flax in the field grew very tall. The farmer gathered the flax and made strong nets. In winter the farmer put the nets in the field. The small birds did not listen, and the nets caught them. The birds understood their mistake, but it was too late.
The wise swallow lived safely on the roofs of the village. It kept away from the danger in time. The other birds felt a great regret.
They saw that an early warning saves a life.
It is no use crying over spilt milk.
