The Wild Donkey and the Tame Donkey
Long ago a wild donkey lived free in the high mountains. This donkey ate fresh grass and drank cold water from streams. One day he came down and passed a big farm. On the farm he saw a clean and fat tame donkey. The tame donkey lay in the sun near good food. The wild donkey envied him and came near the village.
"You are lucky, you eat tasty food every day," he said. The tame donkey nodded proudly and said he was very happy. The wild donkey thought about his hard life and felt sad. But the next morning he went to the village again early. This time he saw the tame donkey under a heavy load. The owner walked behind him and beat him with a stick. The tame donkey cried from tiredness and breathed very hard.
The wild donkey saw this terrible scene and was very surprised. He ran to the tame donkey and looked at him carefully. "Now I do not envy you at all," he said. "Behind your good food there is great pain and slavery." The wild donkey turned back and ran to his free mountains. A poor free life is worth more than riches in chains. They put the nightingale in a golden cage, and it cried: "Oh, my homeland!"
