The Wild Boar and the Fox
Long ago there was a green and peaceful forest with cool streams. In this beautiful forest lived a strong, hard-working and very clever wild boar. Every day the boar walked deep in the forest and watched everything carefully. Under the old oak trees he looked for fresh fruit and rested quietly. When the wind blew softly, all the animals in the forest sang happy songs. One day the boar came to a great tree and stopped.
He began to rub his sharp teeth on the hard bark and sharpen them with care. Just then a sly fox passed by and watched the boar with curiosity. There was no hunter around, and there was no dangerous enemy. The fox came closer with a laugh, because he wanted to mock the boar. "Why are you tiring yourself? There is no danger here!" said the fox. The sly fox smiled slyly at all this useless work.
The boar went on with his work patiently and slowly lifted his head. He looked at the fox and answered in a calm but firm voice. "When danger is at my door, I have no time to sharpen my teeth," he said. "I must get ready for hard times now, and then I am always safe." The fox found no answer to these wise words, and he felt ashamed. A person who is always ready for the future stays safe from great dangers. There is no wisdom like foresight.
