The Thief and the Devil

Once upon a time, in an old town behind the snowy mountains, famed for its decay, there lived a man named Cihan whose eyes were veiled by greed. Cihan held it a burden to earn by the sweat of his brow, and counted it a skill of his own to steal the livelihood of others unjustly. On a foggy night when a pitch darkness had settled over the town, he secretly set out towards the mansion of the rich caravan master. Halfway along the road, a loud-voiced stranger, slipping out from among the shadows with eyes glowing like embers, suddenly appeared before him. Cihan, drawing back in fear, understood at once that this strange traveller was no ordinary man. The stranger, looking at Cihan with a sly smile, said, "Do not be afraid, my friend, I too am an artist who loves to steal the labour of others, just like you."

Cihan proposed, "If your intent is the same, let us steal the caravan master's gold together and share it half and half." The stranger, bursting into laughter, answered, "Let the gold be yours, my eye is on a far more precious spoil." Together they slipped inside through the garden of the huge mansion and easily reached the room where the immense chest of gold stood. While Cihan was filling his sack with the jewels, the stranger suddenly turned into a huge, terrifying shadow and drowned the room in pitch darkness. The Devil, whose true face had come to light, roared, "My concern is not the gold, but the dark soul of a greedy thief like you!" Cihan, seeing the Devil's dreadful flames of hell, grasped with horror the last point that evil reaches.

Cihan, whose whole lust for wealth evaporated in an instant, flung the sack in his hand to the ground and began to flee outside with all his might. While the Devil's laughter rang in his ears, he ran breathlessly all night long and threw himself at the door of a safe house of worship. After that night Cihan learned by bitter experience into what a dreadful abyss unjust gain drags a person. He swore never again to lay a hand on another's property and to lead an honest life. The one who sets out with evil has no companion but disaster. He who sows the wind reaps the storm.
