The Stag at the Pool

A fine deer lived in the forest. One day the thirsty deer found a clear spring. In the water it saw its own reflection. It looked proudly at its big shiny antlers. But the deer did not like its thin legs.

"These weak legs are not beautiful," it thought. Suddenly a big lion came out of the bushes. The deer was afraid and ran away fast. Its thin legs carried it quickly over the plain. But then the deer ran into a thick wood.

Its lovely antlers caught on the tree branches. The legs saved it, but the antlers stopped it. The deer understood its mistake too late. We must not forget true worth for beauty. Beauty is only skin deep.
