The Sow in Labour and the Wolf
Once upon a time, at the edge of an old forest where cool waters flowed, there lived a mother pig. This lovely mother was waiting impatiently for the day when she would take her tiny babies into her arms with the good news of spring. In the shade of an oak tree covered with moss, she had prepared a soft and safe nest for herself. But the cunning wolf, who wandered slyly in the depths of the forest, was following this situation from far away. The hungry wolf was making plans to trick the mother with sweet words and get an easy prey. When the birth pains of the mother pig began, the cunning wolf crept at once up to the door of the nest. Putting a fake smile on his face, he began to speak with his kindest and most tender voice.
“Dear neighbor, I am here to help you in this hard moment,” said the wolf. “If you allow me, I can be your midwife during the birth of your babies and protect them.” So that his words would seem believable, the wolf did not forget to look at the mother pig with innocent eyes. But the clever mother pig had sensed the danger behind this offer of the wolf, which seemed full of kindness. Because she knew the cruel intention of her enemy, she took a deep breath without showing any fear. “Thank you for your kind offer, but I do not need help,” she answered with determination. “The greatest favor you can do for me right now is to go away from here at once.”
The wolf, who understood that his plan was ruined, insisted and tried to come one step closer to the nest. But the mother pig showed her sharp teeth with a firm stance and stood up with pride. “While you are beside me, my babies who will be born are not safe, but if you go, we can find peace,” she added. The cunning wolf, surprised by the brave and firm attitude of the mother, could not insist any more. The wolf, who accepted that he could not get his prey, lowered his head without hope, tucked his tail and went away from there. And the mother pig brought her tiny babies into the world in safety and hugged them with love. Not to be fooled by the fake kindness of bad people is the safest way to protect the ones we love. Do not trust the sweet word of an enemy, nor the sun of winter.
