The Shepherd and His Sheep

Long ago an old shepherd lived in a pretty mountain village full of sweet flowers. Every morning this shepherd took his gentle sheep to the green meadows. The birds sang sweetly and the wind moved the leaves softly. In the evening the shepherd wanted to gather his sheep into the safe fold. But the sheep were very happy with the fresh grass. While the sun slowly went down, the shepherd called his sheep loudly.

The sheep heard the shepherd's voice, but they did not listen. The shepherd took his flute from his pocket and played a sweet tune. The stubborn sheep went on playing and eating grass. The shepherd got very angry and picked up a big stone. The old ram was the leader, and the shepherd threw the stone at him. The stone hit the ram's head and broke his horn.

The shepherd felt very sorry and ran to the ram. In fear he begged, "Please keep this a secret from my master!" The wounded ram looked at the shepherd and sighed deeply. The ram said, "I can stay silent, but my broken horn tells everyone the truth." The shepherd understood his mistake, but now it was too late. In the evening the farm owner saw the broken horn at once. It is never possible to hide mistakes and unfair deeds. Nobody can cover the sun with mud.
