The Shepherd and His Dog
Long ago, beside an old forest with cool waters, there was a small farm. On this farm lived a kind shepherd, a loyal dog and lovely sheep. Every evening the shepherd happily shared his tasty food with his loyal dog. The clever dog guarded the farm all day and watched the animals carefully. The sweet life on the farm went on calmly and peacefully every day. One day an old sheep came to the shepherd and spoke with a sad voice.
"We give you fresh milk, soft wool and tasty cheese," she said. "All year we eat only green grass, but you give the dog good food." The loyal dog listened to these words of the sheep and smiled a little. He walked slowly up to the sheep and answered her kindly. "Without me, you could not eat this grass without fear," said the loyal dog. "All night I keep the wild wolves away and I protect you."
When the sheep heard these important words, she felt very ashamed. She understood at once how the dog worked for them day and night. From that day on, the sheep showed great respect to the dog. All the animals on the farm went on living happily like good friends. In a community the work and the duty of each one is different, but very valuable. Without work there is no food.
