The Sheep, the Dog and the Wolf
Once upon a time, at the edge of an old forest where cool waters flowed, there lived a gentle sheep. With its soft snow-white fleece, this sheep had won the love and respect of all the animals around it. Every day it grazed peacefully in the wide meadows near the village and sang songs with joy. But a cunning dog that lived in the same region always envied the sheep's peaceful life. The dog decided to make a sly plan to take by force what the innocent sheep had. One sunny afternoon the dog settled down beside the grazing sheep and began to shout out loud. "You still have not given back the loaf of bread you borrowed from me last month!" he said, slandering it.
The poor sheep defended itself in surprise, saying, "I never asked you for bread!" But the ill-natured dog called the cruel wolf, who never acted justly, as his false witness. The wolf came out of the depths of the forest, showed his sharp teeth and stepped forward with a frightening air. The wolf grinned and said, "Yes, I was there that day and I myself saw the sheep take the bread." The sheep looked helplessly at those around it, but no one could speak up against this dangerous alliance. Forced to obey the unjust judgement, the sheep handed its winter food over to these two greedy animals. The dog and the wolf shared the delicious food between them with the pride of having tricked the innocent sheep.
A few weeks passed, and when the freezing winter winds covered the forest, things changed. The cruel wolf, left hungry, fell into the net of the hunters who had set a trap and was shut in a deep pit. Soon after, the cunning dog too was driven from the flock by the villagers and condemned to loneliness. Sitting safely in its own warm home, the sheep watched from afar the sad end of those who had done wrong. True justice had come about sooner or later, and innocence had won the victory once again. Unjust gain won by lying never brings its owner happiness or plenty. The liar's candle burns only until nightfall.
