The Runaway Slave
Once upon a time, at the edge of an old forest where cool waters flowed, lived a cruel merchant. A young and brave servant working for this merchant could not stand the injustices and fled into the forest. This dark forest covered with every shade of green gave the youth great hope mixed with fear. The tired young man took shelter in a deep cave among the rocks to spend the night. While resting against the cool walls of the cave, suddenly a moaning lion came out from the darkness.
The youth trembling with fear expected the wild animal to attack him, but the lion only extended its paw. Looking carefully, the young man noticed a huge and sharp thorn stuck in the giant paw. "Do not fear my friend, I will help you," he said, courageously pulling the thorn out of the paw. The relieved giant lion placed its head on the youth's knee as if thanking him and lay down beside him. That night, the two friends fell into a peaceful sleep in the cave, trusting each other. However, a few days later, the cruel merchant's soldiers found the youth's trail and captured him.
Thrown into a dungeon, the young man was condemned to be thrown before hungry lions as punishment. In front of the crowd gathered in the square, the cage door opened with a loud noise. The giant lion rushing out suddenly stopped just as it was about to pounce on the youth. Recognizing the youth, the huge animal, instead of roaring wildly, began to lick his hands in a friendly manner. Watching this miraculous event with astonishment, the king immediately called the young man to his side and asked for his story.
Learning the truth, the king rewarded the youth's courage and the lion's loyalty, setting them both free. A small step taken with kindness turns into a great shield that saves a person in the hardest times. One good turn deserves another.
