The Rabbits and the Foxes
Long ago, small rabbits lived by an old forest with cool streams. In this green forest, sweet bird songs and fresh grass filled the air. But strong eagles glided in the sky and always troubled the shy rabbits. The rabbits were very afraid and lived a restless life. At last the old rabbit leader called a big meeting about this fear. The rabbits decided to visit the clever foxes and ask for help.
The next morning a small group of rabbits set off to the fox den. The old rabbit came closer and began to speak in an excited voice. "Strong fox brother, the eagles hunt us and give us no peace," he said. "Please help us, fight the eagles and drive them from the forest," he added. The fox looked at the rabbits with clever eyes and smiled a little. "We really wanted to help you," the sly fox answered.
"But we know very well who you are and how strong your enemy is." The fox knew that a fight against the eagles was impossible for foxes. When the rabbits heard these words, they felt a great disappointment. They understood that they acted without knowing their own strength or their enemy. Quietly they went home and looked for new, clever ways against the eagles. Those who run into great danger without knowing their strength wait for help in vain. Do not bite off more than you can chew.
