The Piece of Wood in the Sea
On a sunny day two curious friends walked along the seashore. The blue water was calm, and a soft wind blew over it. Suddenly Kenan saw a dark shape far out on the sea. The thing was very far away, but it slowly came closer. The two friends stopped and watched the mysterious shape with excitement. Kenan cried, "Look Mert, that is surely a big golden ship!"
Mert half closed his eyes and smiled at his friend. "No, I think it is a trade ship with fine cloth," he said. The shape came a little nearer, and their excitement grew. Mert said, "We were wrong, it is only a small fishing boat." But Kenan dreamed of a wonderful treasure and waited with impatience. The two friends made happy plans and waited on the sand.
The waves of the sea pushed the strange thing toward the beach. When it finally touched the land, both of them ran to it. But the thing in front of them was a big disappointment. It was not a rich ship, and it was not a boat. It was only an old piece of wood from the wide sea. The two friends looked at each other and laughed at their empty dreams. Things that look great from far away are often very ordinary up close. From a distance, the drum always sounds sweet.
