The Old Farmer and the Donkeys
An old farmer set out toward his village with five donkeys he bought from the market. The farmer mounted one of the donkeys himself and began counting the donkeys behind him. Seeing four donkeys behind him, the farmer jumped down in excitement and shouted "Alas, one of my donkeys is lost!" When he got down and counted, seeing there were five donkeys, the farmer mounted again; however, forgetting to count the donkey he was riding, he became flustered again.
When his grandson arrived and said "Grandpa, if you count the donkey you are riding too, you will see there are five donkeys," the farmer laughed. It is great absentmindedness for a person to forget their own position and the opportunities they benefit from and think they lost valuable things. Counting without taking into account where you yourself stand gives wrong results. Carelessness and absentmindedness cause an inability to see simple truths.
Failing to notice the situation you are in leads to funny mistakes. Do not forget the donkey you are riding. Absentmindedness covers simple truth. Take into account where you yourself stand.
Failing to see what is in front of your eyes confuses. Careful counting prevents mistake. Awareness is the greatest blessing.
