The Lion's Skin and the Dogs
A hunter skinned a lion he shot and left the skin under a tree to dry. Seeing the skin, a cowardly group of neighborhood dogs surrounded it, barked angrily, and began tearing the skin apart with their teeth. A cunning fox watching them from among the bushes came forward and mocked the dogs. The fox said "When this lion was alive, when you heard his roar, you would look for a place to flee; have you become warriors now by tearing his dead skin?"
Making a display of courage behind competitors who lost their power, remained ineffective, or passed away is not genuine bravery. Cowardly people are very keen to pretend heroics after the danger has passed. True courage is the stance shown while the threat is alive and strong. Stepping on the dead or fallen is an indicator of weakness.
Attacking the enemy's dead is not bravery, but cowardice. Attacking the fallen is cowardice. True courage is shown in live danger. One does not become a hero after danger passes.
Shouting behind the dead is weakness. The coward watches for the safe moment. Bravery is standing before the strong.
