The Kite and the Doves
Once upon a time, there was a peaceful land of birds hidden in the shade of bright green oak trees. In this land there lived cheerful and innocent doves that glided with snow-white feathers. But a cruel kite perched on the high cliffs constantly cast a shadow over their joy. The doves beat their wings in fear every day and could not enjoy the sky as much as they wished. The cunning kite, gliding from on high, watched for a chance to hunt them. One day the cunning kite prepared a treacherous plan in order to hunt more doves.
He perched on the highest branch of the tree and called to the doves in a sweet tone. "Why do you spend your lives in fear, fleeing from me every day?" he asked. "If you choose me as your king, I will gladly protect you from all the other birds of prey," he said. The doves were amazed at this tempting promise and began to whisper excitedly among themselves. The naive doves believed the kite's false friendship and thought they would be saved from this fearful life. So they joyfully proclaimed the kite their king and bowed down before him.
But as soon as the cunning kite put on the crown, he at once showed his true and dark face. He began to catch the doves he had promised to protect, one by one every day, and to eat them with relish. The helpless doves fell into great terror before this disaster they had chosen with their own hands. One of them whispered, "Even our old fear was much better than this cruel kingdom." The doves, who had made their enemy their lord, paid a heavy price for their wrong choice. In the end the poor birds, having lost their freedom, were left alone with bitter regret. Those who seek peace by hoping for help from an enemy are doomed to lose all the good they have. He who falls by his own doing does not weep.
