The Greedy Are Never Content

Once upon a time, in a fascinating sky country hidden behind silver clouds, lived a very beautiful Moon. This Moon lit up the dark world at night and danced joyfully with the stars. However, the Moon had a very changeable nature, a deep restlessness that would not pass no matter what she did. She constantly complained about her clothes, saying she could not find a perfect dress that suited her. Finally, she decided to go to her wise mother, who was a tailor, and beg her in a coy voice.

"Dear mother, sew me such a bright and stylish dress that everyone talks about my beauty," she said. Her mother looked at her daughter with eyes full of love and got right to work, preparing her silk threads. Working day and night for a few days, she sewed a magnificent dress embroidered with silver threads. But when the dress was completed, because the Moon took the shape of a thin crescent, the dress was very loose on her. The Moon immediately frowned and shouted, "This dress is falling off me, I don't like it at all!" The patient mother narrowed the dress without complaining and made it completely suitable for her daughter's new state.

However, a few nights later, the Moon became thoroughly round, becoming a full moon and starting to shine. This time, the narrowed dress was so tight on the Moon's tightly wrapped body that it seemed about to burst. "Mother, I can't even breathe in this tight dress you sewed!" she continued to complain. The skillful mother gently placed the needle and scissors in her hand onto the silver tray and took a deep sigh. Approaching her daughter with compassion, she began, "Oh my beautiful but indecisive daughter."

"How can I sew a dress that fits you perfectly when you never stay the same?" she said. "Sometimes you are a tiny crescent, and sometimes a huge round full moon," she added. "Because of your changing desires and ever-changing body, no one in the world can sew a dress that fits you." Ashamed in the face of her mother's rightful words, the Moon fell silent and finally understood her mistake. Someone who does not know how to be content with constantly changing desires can never find peace no matter what is done. A greedy person may fill his belly, but his eyes are never satisfied.
