The Goat and the Donkey
Once upon a time, on a broad farm beyond the lush green valleys, there lived a plump farmer. This farmer had a hardworking donkey and a goat of a jealous nature. From morning till evening the donkey carried heavy loads, and its owner offered it the freshest grasses. The goat, however, sat in its corner and secretly envied with deep greed the attention that the donkey received. One day the goat devised a sly plan to take away the donkey's fine position. With an innocent-looking step, the goat came up to the grazing donkey and began to speak with sweet words.
"My dear friend, I am truly very sorry about this heavy pace of work of yours," it said. In great naivety the donkey pricked up its ears and listened curiously to what the jealous goat would say. With a sly smile the goat whispered: "I think you should let yourself fall into a pit a little and pretend to be injured." "Then our owner will take pity on you and give you delicious food so that you may rest for days." The naive donkey, who believed this idea, let itself drop down the next day while crossing a deep ditch. But the poor animal did not land lightly as it had planned; it crashed to the ground very hard.
With its leg broken and its body crushed, the donkey began to cry out, writhing in pain. The experienced physician whom the owner had called examined the donkey lying in its bed at great length. Shaking his head from side to side, the physician said: "There is only one remedy for this animal to get well." "If the liver of a fresh goat is boiled and its broth is given to the donkey to drink, only then can it get back on its feet." The farmer, who loved his donkey very much, without any hesitation caught the jealous goat in the yard and sacrificed it. The goat, which fell into the pit it had dug for another, paid the price of its greed with its life. Those who wish evil upon others fall sooner or later into the trap they have set themselves. He who digs a pit for another falls into it first.
