The Fox and the Moon's Reflection
Once upon a time, deep in a magical forest where silver rivers babbled, there lived a Cunning Fox. This fox, whose red fur gleamed even at night, was known for its selfish and insatiable curiosity. On a cool autumn night, when the full moon lit the sky like a lantern, the fox's stomach was rumbling with hunger. Listening to the silence of the forest as it looked for prey, the fox came to the edge of a clear pond. The still waters of the pond reflected the immense full moon in the sky, just like a giant mirror. Seeing that golden glow at the bottom of the water, the fox opened its eyes wide with excitement. "Aha!" whispered the fox, greedily licking its whiskers.
"There lies a huge wheel of fresh cheese, hidden under the water!" The fox, whose greed overcame its reason, decided not to share this delicious cheese with anyone. It thought that in order to reach the cheese, it had to drink up all the water of the pond. It went at once to the shore and began to drink water from the pond in great gulps. One gulp, two gulps, and within minutes its belly swelled up like a drum. Meanwhile a wise owl, watching it from a branch, smiled at the fox's foolishness. "What you see is only the reflection of the moon in the sky, brother fox, do not toil in vain!" called the owl.
But the arrogant fox was too greedy to listen to anyone else's words. The moment it bent down and rushed into the pond to seize the cheese, it lost its balance and tumbled into the icy water. With the waves that rose in the water, the golden cheese at the bottom broke into thousands of pieces in an instant and vanished. Coming ashore wet, soaked and with a swollen belly, the fox raised its head and looked at the sky. When it saw the full moon standing whole and untouched in the sky, it understood the truth and felt deep shame for its mistake. While trying to soothe its hunger, it was disgraced and also left shivering with cold. Those who are deceived by appearances and act out of greed are doomed to lose even what they hold and to end in disappointment. A little greed brings a great loss.
