The Eagle and the Crow
Once upon a time, this tale takes place on a wide plain where the winds gliding from behind the high hills blew with joy. A great eagle, the proud master of the sky, lived alone on the top of the steep cliffs. A curious crow that lived in the same valley constantly watched the majestic flight of this strong bird. Forgetting her own small wings, the crow dreamed every day of becoming a brave and unbeatable hero like him. One bright spring morning the eagle set his sharp eyes on the flock grazing among the fresh grass of the plain. Gliding down with great grace, he swiftly seized a tiny lamb between his beak and his claws.
Beating his strong wings a single time, he easily rose with his prey towards the blue depths of the sky. The crow, watching him with envy, put on a swaggering air and began to talk to herself. "I can do this simple thing he does more than well enough," she cawed in her arrogance. Her eyes darkened with greed, the crow dashed swiftly at the biggest ram with the curliest wool that she had picked out. She came down on the huge ram's back with all her strength and drove her sharp claws into his thick wool. But when she tried to shoot upwards with force, she could not budge that heavy body even by a hair.
When the poor crow understood that she could not take off, she wanted to draw back in fear, but her claws were tangled fast in the thick wool. The shepherd, hearing the cries of the helpless crow, who sank in deeper the more she struggled, came running to the spot at once. The shepherd smiled, caught the crow, cut short her pointed wing feathers and put her in a cage. When he came home in the evening, the shepherd gave this funny bird to his small children to play with. To the children's question, "What kind of bird is this, father?" the shepherd answered, "A foolish crow who thinks she is an eagle."
