The Donkey and the Mule

Long ago an old man had a donkey and a mule. Every morning he loaded his animals and walked to the town. On a sunny day the man put very heavy sacks on the donkey. The mule carried only two small light bags. The two friends started to walk on a long, dusty road. The hot air tired the donkey, and he walked very slowly.

The donkey turned and looked at his friend with sad eyes. "Please help me, my load is too heavy," he said. The mule shook his head with pride and said no. "Everyone carries his own load. I cannot help you," he said. They walked on, but the donkey's legs were shaking a lot. A little later the donkey lost all his power and fell down.

The old man ran at once and tried to lift the poor donkey. The donkey could not walk, so the man took the sacks away. He put all the donkey's heavy sacks on the mule's back. Suddenly the mule carried a very heavy load. The selfish mule understood his mistake, but now it was too late. People who never help finally carry a much bigger load. We know a true friend on a bad day.
