The Donkey and the Mule

Once, beyond green valleys, lived a cheerful merchant. The merchant owned a hardworking donkey and a strong mule. One sunny day, he prepared large sacks for market. He loaded most heavy sacks onto the old donkey. The mule received only two light bags.

The poor donkey grew tired climbing steep hills. The donkey sweated, and its steps slowed. It looked at the mule and pleaded softly. "Please help; take some of my load," it said. "Without help, I will fall and die here," it added. The selfish mule shook its head and ignored the plea. "It is your load; I will enjoy myself," it replied.

Soon, the exhausted donkey collapsed and could go no farther. The merchant rushed over sadly, but it was too late. He quickly removed all the heavy sacks from the donkey. He gave it every sack and the dead donkey's saddle. Crushed beneath the huge load, the mule understood too late. Those who refuse timely help face greater hardships later. Strength grows from unity.
