The Donkey and His Driver

Long ago an old farmer had a very stubborn donkey. Every morning the man and the donkey walked to the town. The road was narrow, but the man knew every danger well. The donkey was tired of its load and wanted its own way. On a sunny day they started another long and hard journey. On the steep mountain road the donkey stopped and left the path.

It ran toward the short but very dangerous track above the cliff. The driver ran after the donkey and pulled the rope hard. "Stop, that place is very dangerous!" the man shouted. But the stubborn donkey did not listen and went on toward the cliff. The man pulled its tail with all his strength. The donkey did not step back and pushed forward even harder.

The man became very tired and understood the truth at last. He let the tail go and looked sadly at the stubborn animal. "You want to win, but this will be your end," he said. The donkey lost its balance and fell fast down the cliff. The stubborn animal saw its mistake, but it was already too late. Stubbornness in dangerous work always brings great harm to a man. He who will not listen must feel.
