The Dog with the Bell
There was a vicious dog who secretly approached people on the street and bit them on the legs. His master tied a heavy bell that made noise around the dog's neck to warn people and announce the dog's arrival. Hearing the sound of the bell around his neck, the vicious dog thought he had received a very important award and began walking proudly in the market. An old dog walking around saw him and said "Why are you so proud? That bell is not an award to you, but a mark of shame for your cunning and evil."
Those who draw pride from their own flaws and the punishments they receive fail to realize that they are actually displaying their disgrace. Behaviors condemned and warned against by society cannot be made a cause for pride. Those who mistake their shames for honor are condemned to embarrassment in the face of wisdom. True honor and reputation are earned through proper actions.
Punishment and marks of shame should not be made a cause for pride. Pride is not born from shame. A mark of shame is not considered honor. Do not mistake the punishment of evil for an award.
One deceived by appearances becomes disgraced. True reputation lies in honesty. Accepting one's flaw is maturity.
