The Dog and the Lamb
Once upon a time, a cheerful lamb lived at the edge of an old forest where cool waters flowed. This lovable lamb grazed on the soft grass of the meadows and won everyone's affection with its snow white and warm wool. Near the same farm there wandered a cunning and grumpy dog who always wanted more. The dog dreamed of gaining profit the easy way without working, and he fixed his eyes on the lamb's precious wool. On a sunny autumn morning the dog prepared a sly plan to trap the innocent lamb. The dog blocked the lamb's path and began to slander him in a loud voice.
“Last month you borrowed a loaf of fresh bread from me, you must pay your debt at once!” he shouted. The astonished lamb politely stated that he had never eaten bread in his life and owed nothing to anyone. But the malicious dog showed as witnesses the cunning fox and the lying wolf that he had called to his side. The fox and the wolf immediately confirmed the dog's lie, merely to get a share of the lamb's warm wool. The poor lamb pleaded again and again, yet before this triple alliance he could explain his trouble to nobody. When the pressure of the false witnesses grew, the helpless lamb had to bow to an unjust decision.
In return for the debt, the dog greedily carried the lamb's shorn soft wool to his own kennel. But this unjust gain obtained through fraud did not bring the dog the happiness and the peace he had hoped for. When the greedy fox and the hungry wolf demanded a share, a great quarrel broke out among them. In the violent fight the wool was caught by the wind, scattered into the depths of the forest and vanished completely. Moreover the deceitful dog was noticed by the just farmer and was driven out of the farm entirely. The lamb, on the other hand, was safely protected in his warm home with the help of his friends until his fleece grew again. Unjust gains obtained by relying on lies and slander never bring people any good. Lies have short legs.
