The Dog and Its Shadow
A dog holding a huge piece of meat in his mouth was crossing a wooden bridge over a river. Looking into the still water, the dog saw his own reflection and thought it was another dog with meat in its mouth. Overcome with greed, the dog wanted to snatch that meat too and eat two pieces of meat. Opening his mouth angrily, he began barking loudly at the reflection in the water.
As soon as he opened his mouth, the delicious piece of meat between his teeth fell into the water and vanished with the current. Realizing that the meat in the water was just his own shadow, the greedy dog left hungry and regretful. Those who are not content with what they have and demand more lose even what they hold and remain empty-handed. Greed makes one forget current blessings and deprives them of what they possess.
Whoever is not content with what they have loses even that. Greed leaves desire unfulfilled. The greedy person loses what they hold. Seeking too much loses the little.
Tricked by the shadow, one loses the meat. Insatiability brings disaster. Contentment is the greatest wealth.
