The Dog and Her Puppies
Once upon a time, at the edge of an old forest where cool waters flowed, there was a warm hut. In this comfortable hut there lived a generous and kind-hearted dog named Karabaş. One autumn evening, while a storm raged outside, a pregnant mother dog came to his door. The poor guest, with her shivering body and helpless eyes, asked Karabaş for a place to shelter for a few days. Karabaş felt very sorry for his guest's condition and gladly opened his own home to her. A short time later the mother dog brought her tiny and lovely puppies into the world.
Karabaş helped them until the puppies grew up and agreed to sleep in the garden of the hut. The weeks flowed by quickly, and the tiny pups became big and strong grown dogs. When the cold winter days came knocking at the door, Karabaş wished to return to his own warm home. He came kindly up to the mother dog and asked, "Your puppies have grown now; will you give me back my home?" But the mother dog looked at Karabaş with no trace left of her old grateful manner. "My children and I are very comfortable here, and we have no intention of going anywhere," she said coldly.
Karabaş objected in surprise: "But I opened my arms to you in kindness on your hard day." The mother dog showed her teeth and answered, "If you want to drive us out of here, you will have to fight all five of us at once." When Karabaş looked at the crowded and strong pack before him, he understood that he could do nothing alone. He realized with sorrow what a great mistake it had been to share his hut out of a single moment of pity. Wronged as he was, he bowed his head and had to walk away from that lovely warm hut. Karabaş, who had met ingratitude in return for his generosity, swore never again to give endless power to people he did not know. Kindness done without thought can sometimes cost a person his own home and his peace. Feed the crow and it will peck out your eye.
