The Crow and Hermes
When a crow got caught in a hunter's trap net, out of fear he pleaded with the god Apollo saying he would make an offering if saved. As soon as the crow escaped the trap, he forgot the offering promised to Apollo and sacrificed nothing. When time passed and the crow got caught in a more dangerous trap for the second time, this time he promised offerings to the god Hermes. Knowing the crow's hypocrisy, Hermes said "Who trusts the second oath of a liar who did not keep his first word?" and did not help him.
Those who plead and make promises in hard days but forget their word when reaching safety find no door to take refuge in during subsequent disasters. Lies and unkept words completely destroy a person's trustworthiness, causing them to remain alone in times of crisis. Those who try to deceive gods and humans are condemned to helplessness in their most needy moments. Fidelity to promises and honesty are the only solid fortress to come to rescue in hard moments.
No one believes a liar's excuses in hard times. A given promise is not forgotten. The hypocrite remains alone in hard times. A lie destroys trust.
Whoever does not keep their word finds no help. Honesty is the most solid fortress. Infidelity to promises brings disaster.
