The Battle of the Bulls and the Frogs
Once upon a time, at the edge of an old forest where cool waters flowed, there was a deep pond. In this calm pond lived cheerful frogs with green skin, in peace. Right beside the pond stretched a wide and fertile meadow shaded by lofty trees. One day two enormous bulls came face to face in this meadow. The magnificent bulls began to look at each other in fury, in order to lead the herd. When the great struggle began, the terrible bellowing of the bulls filled the whole valley. The giant creatures butting each other amid dust and smoke fairly shook the ground.
An old and experienced frog on the bank of the pond watched this fight with anxious eyes. A young frog who saw him trembling came up to him curiously. The young frog asked, "Why are you so afraid, my wise friend?" "Those strong animals are fighting on land; what have they to do with our deep and safe pond?" The old frog gave a deep sigh and turned to his young neighbour. "The danger is much nearer than you think, my little friend," he said sadly. "When one of the bulls is beaten, he will look for a place to flee and will take shelter in our reeds."
As the sun set, the merciless war of the bulls came at last to an end. The bull that had grown weak began to flee desperately, wounded. The defeated giant animal ran straight towards the pond, just as the old frog had said. The bull entered the reeds with heavy steps and began to trample the muddy water furiously. Under those enormous hooves many a wretched frog was, alas, crushed. The power struggle of the magnificent bulls turned into a great disaster for the innocent dwellers of the pond. The greedy quarrels of the great among themselves harm, alas, the weak most of all. When elephants fight, it is the grass that is trampled.
