The Badly Shorn Sheep

Long ago, beside an old forest of cool waters, there was a small farm. On that pretty farm lived a white sheep with soft, lovely wool. When the hot summer came, the sheep's wool grew long and heavy. A young shepherd with no experience came to work on the farm. He took big shears to cut the sheep's wool. But the young shepherd did not know how to use them.

He waved the shears in a hurry and hurt the sheep badly. The shears cut both the soft wool and the sheep's skin. The poor sheep jumped with pain and looked at the clumsy shepherd. Then the sheep spoke to him calmly, with a human voice. "If you only want my wool, please hold the shears higher," it said. "If you want my meat, kill me quickly and without pain," it added.

"But do not cut my skin together with my wool," it said. The young shepherd understood his mistake and lowered his head in shame. He put the shears down slowly and said sorry to the sheep. He decided to call a master shepherd and learn the work from him. The master shepherd cut the wool carefully and without any pain. The white sheep felt better and ran happily across the green meadow. When you do a job, you must always be careful and skilled. Nobody becomes a master of a craft he never learned.
