Heracles and Athena

While advancing on a narrow mountain road, the mighty hero Heracles saw a strange object resembling an apple on the ground. When Heracles stepped on the object to crush it, the object suddenly grew to twice its size. Angered by this, Heracles pulled out his heavy club and began hitting the object with all his might. However, as it was hit, the object grew even larger, reaching a giant size and completely blocking the road.

While Heracles remained in astonishment and anger, Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, arrived beside him. Athena said "Stop being astonished Heracles, this object you see is Anger and Strife; as you attack it, it grows, but if you leave it alone, it shrinks." Anger and strife feed on violence; as they are pressed, they spiral out of control and swallow humans. Staying calm in the face of anger and leaving it alone is the greatest wisdom.

Anger grows as it is hit. Strife feeds on violence. Calmness extinguishes anger. Rising in anger leads to sitting in loss.

Violence enlarges strife. The wise person stays calm. Anger left alone dies down.
