Diogenes and the Bald Man
Once upon a time, a wise man lived in an old town by the blue sea. The name of this wise man was Diogenes, and he lived happily in his barrel. In the day he watched the warm light of the sun, and at night he listened to the bright stars. The people of the town came to him every day to hear his kind words. Diogenes always stayed calm and answered everyone with a smile. On a hot morning, when the sun shone brightly, a rude man came to the town.
This man had no hair on his head, and he fought with everyone for no reason. The bald man saw wise Diogenes next to the barrel. He shouted at him loudly and insulted him with ugly words. The people around him became very sad, but the wise man did not get angry. Diogenes only smiled and looked at the rude man carefully. The bald man saw this calm face and became even angrier.
The silent crowd waited and wondered a lot about the wise man's answer. Diogenes stood up calmly and came closer to the man. "I will not say a bad word to you," said the wise man. "But I want to congratulate the hair on your head," he added. "Because that fine hair left a foolish head like yours very early." The rude man found no answer and walked away in shame. A clever person answers bad words with wit, not with anger. He who rises in anger sits down with a loss.
