Aesop and the Corinthians
Once upon a time, proud people lived in a rich port city where the wind blew gently. This beautiful city named Corinth was known everywhere for its golden towers and colorful markets. But the people of the city constantly bragged about their noble ancestors and paid no mind to strangers. One day, wise storyteller Aesop decided to visit this magnificent city. Aesop was saddened to see that people took pride only in wealth and family lineage.
The crowd gathered in the city's main square surrounded Aesop and began to mock him. An arrogant merchant stepped forward and boasted, saying, "Our ancestors are kings!" Smiling, Aesop pulled a small piece of mud and a shiny stone from his pocket. "In ancient times, when nature kneaded humans out of clay, it added the same love to everyone," he said. "Your noble ancestors left you a wonderful heritage, but what are you doing today?" Someone in the crowd continued to shout, "Our lineage is the most supreme lineage!" Aesop took a deep breath and told a wise tale to the arrogant people in the square.
A pine tree at the peak of high mountains looked down arrogantly at a small daisy in the valley. But when a storm hit, the pine tree fell over, while the flexible daisy survived. When the Corinthians heard this impressive story, they paused for a moment and plunged into deep thought. They began to realize that the greatness of their ancestors did not make them better human beings. The oldest wise man in the city bowed respectfully before Aesop and thanked him. From that day on, the people of the city learned to judge people by their goodness, not by their lineage. Aesop left the piece of mud from his pocket on the ground and set out on his way with a sweet smile on his face.
True value is hidden not in a person's past, but in their own heart and actions. A tree is known by its fruit, a person by their deeds.
